Friday 13th turned into a horror for many onlookers last night after weird lights in the sky prompted fears of crashing planes or an alien invasion.
Callers phoned the police in droves after spotting the stunt aircraft with flames shooting from the back of them.
Lots of videos posted on social media featured people screaming as they spotted flaming aircraft crashing through the skies.
Other’s panicked it was something even more cataclysmic, such as an alien invasion.
LeicestershireLive has tried to contact Aerosparx, which has put on similar displays in the past and is believed to be behind the show.
The police have also warned there will be another display tonight.
Jess Taylor, who lives in the Saffron Lane area of the city, wrote in a message to LeicestershireLive: “I’ve seen eight different objects with flames on them which then disappear. They look like rockets or exploded jets on aeroplanes.”
Another reader wrote in a message: “I want to ask what was the fire thing flying just few minutes ago? Everyone is talking about it. People are saying it’s aliens.”
Mackay Jamie sent us his Facebook Live post. In the narration he says: “There’s two blue balls of light going flying through the sky.
“This is freaky. We’ve definitely got UFOs over Leicester tonight, people.
“I think it’s aliens. It’s weird as hell. It’s insane. That went on for about 20 minutes.
“These two things are yellow. They first come out blue and then they fly, meet each other, fly about and then it’s literarlly like a stream of fire coming from them. What the hell is it?
“You can see it’s like a ball of fire.”
Another video sent to LeicestershireLive features a group of friends panicking as they watch the flaming planes.
One says: “That’s so weird. I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit scared.”
Another replies: “It’s coming towards us! Oh my God, it could be an aeroplane on fire. Something’s on fire!”
The replies on Facebook to our story last night included a mix of relief and scepticism.
Rachael Spriggs said: “Glad this mystery has been solved. We took our dogs out for a walk late last night and my hubby said he could see a ‘green circle around a plane in the sky’.
“I thought he had drank to much before going out.”
Gemma Bee said: “It was a plane. I thought the engine was on fire! Was a bit worried when it did a U-turn and was flying back towards my house!”
Janice Phillips said: “I saw these whilst driving back along the A14 two months ago. It’s very disturbing when you don’t know what they are.”
But some were not so trusting of the “official” version of events.
One Facebook user commented: “Fireworks from planes? Yeah OK then.
“Cover up. If this was an actual event with something as rare as setting fireworks off from airplanes then I’m sure there would be loads of people at that event posting pics and video footage.”
Charlie Henson responded sarcastically: “Government cover up. Deffo aliens.”
Speaking after a previous display led to claims of ‘UFOs’, AeroSPARX team leader Guy Westgate told LeicestershireLive in June: “When we fly we always get people calling 999 worrying that an airplane is on fire.
“I encourage people to do this because one day a plane will be on fire and it will need our help.
“For every event we pre-notify the police so if they do receive any calls of this nature they can contact us directly and check whether it’s part of the display or if we are having an emergency.
“We’re always really heartened that people care enough to put the call in.
“It’s a bizarre way of people engaging in what we do but it’s nice to hear.”
